We are happy to share we are providing permit expediting services to develop a new affordable housing community in D.C.’s Deanwood neighborhood. The development will also include the renovation of the historic Strand Theater.
Since 1928, the Strand Theater has served multiple purposes–a dance hall, pool room, and 600-seat movie theater. Perhaps most significant, it’s been a source of pride for Deanwood residents since it first opened more than 90 years ago.
In 2021, the historic theater will transform once again—this time as a restaurant, community space, and neighbor to adorable housing development, the Strand Residences.
NHP Foundation, the Warrenton Group, and the Washington Metropolitan CDC have teamed up to develop the Strand Residences and renovate the theater. The mixed-use development at 5119-5123 and 5127 Nannie Helen Burroughs Avenue NE, will include 86 one-and two-bedroom affordable apartments. Households earning up to 60 percent of area median income will be eligible for residence. Twenty-eight of the units are set to become new homes for nearby Lincoln Heights and Richardson Dwellings residents.
Beyond the 86 affordable units, the residences will also include a multipurpose room, exercise room, bike storage space, outdoor terrace for grilling, and on-site resident services provided by NHP Foundation’s affiliate organization, Operation Pathways. The ground floor will include 2622 square feet of retail space for a neighborhood non-profit and a community-based retailer.
